What happened during Phase 1?
Phase 1 of the CCU Rev it Up project was the first step in our long term construction plan. During this phase, patient rooms in the CCU were retrofitted with in-room medical gas, oxygen, and suction capabilities. The bathing room was also completely updated, with new floors and wall tile, two new bathing tubs, a new toilet and new room divider curtains. In-room medical gasses and suction were also installed in both the bathing room and dentist's office. Phase 1 was completed in mid June 2009.
What is Phase 2 and how long will it last?
Phase 2 began in mid January 2010. This phase will focus on updating children's rooms. Each room will receive new lighting and flooring, along with new ceiling tile. The walls will be given a fresh coat of paint, and new millwork will provide extra space and more convenient storage for each child's personal items. Phase 2 is scheduled to be completed in mid June 2010.
How often will children be moved from room to room?
Throughout the construction process, some children that are most medically fragile will be moved into vacant rooms in the Transitional Care Unit. The individual CCU rooms will be worked on in groups of 3-4 at a time, so children will be moved around as little as possible.
What safety procautions are being taken?
Air scrubbers are being utilized in rooms undergoing renovations to keep dust from getting out into the unit. Doors to the rooms remain closed, and plastic coverings for the hallways are available to act as an extra barrier for dust if needed. Mats also have been placed outside affected rooms to eliminate tracking through the unit, and trash carts ensure all debris is removed quickly and efficiently. As the majority of renovations included in Phase 2 are cosmetic rather than structural changes, excessive construction-related noise is not expected to be a factor throughout the renovation process.
All contractors and their workers also undergo daily health screenings aimed at recognizing the symptoms of illness before workers spend time on the unit. H1N1 shots have been made available to those involved in the renovation process, and many have taken advantage of the offer. Workers have also been strongly encouraged to get vaccinated for the seasonal flu as yet another precaution.
ChildServe managers interact frequently with construction contractors and architects to discuss any safety concerns and work together towards eliminating or resolving these issues. The safety of the children, staff, and construction team is our first priority.
