H1N1 (Swine) Flu Update
Thursday, 14 May 2009 11:49

As the media continues reporting on the health alert that has been issued about the H1N1 (swine) flu, we are continuing to monitor the situation and the latest updates closely to ensure the health and safety of the children in our care. At this time, we are continuing to restrict visitors and volunteer activities in our Continuing Care and Transitional Care Units to protect our medically fragile children. We are also asking all outpatient families and visitors to perform self-assessments and to return at another date if they are exhibiting symptoms of H1N1 virus. Please monitor this Web site for future updates.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) are excellent resources for the latest information relative to this outbreak. We encourage you to visit their sites to read the information relevant to you.

For the well-being of our children, families, staff, volunteers, and visitors, there are some prudent and simple things to help avoid becoming ill. They include:

  • Washing your hands, using soap and warm water, particularly after shaking hands and before putting your hands to your eyes or mouth
  • Getting plenty of rest
  • Maintaining a healthy degree of physical activity
  • Managing your stress
  • Drinking plenty of fluids
  • Eating nutritious foods

The symptoms of the swine flu are similar to seasonal influenza and may include cough, runny nose, fever, body aches, respiratory symptoms, and, in some cases, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. If you experience these symptoms, please consult with your physician, who will determine the appropriate course of treatment.

Please take care of yourself!
