ChildServe is proud to announce an educational and inspiring event for families of children with autism and anyone who is touched by autism. This three-day event is free to the public and will feature speakers with messages of optimism and practical advice, as well as a forum for families to share stories and wisdom.
The keynote speakers on September 23rd are the Savarese family: Ralph, Emily, and DJ. This family has inspired thousands of people through the publication of Ralph’s book, Reasonable People: A Memoir of Autism and Adoption. The book traces the development of DJ, a boy with autism written off as profoundly retarded and now, an honors student at Grinnell High School and the author of the last chapter of the book. The Savarese family offers a unique insight into the politics of neurological difference, the challenges of inclusion, and the determination to see the potential in every child.
The theme of the event on September 24th is communication and sensory issues and features a presentation by Denese Sanden, OTR/L. Denese will offer practical advice about how to support people with sensory needs who are using behaviors that disrupt heir own lives and desired outcomes.
On Thursday, September 25th, Bill Kallestad will give an overview of positive behavioral support. Positive behavior support (PBS) aims to decrease potentially problematic behavior by proactively enhancing an individual’s lifestyle, making environmental changes, and teaching new skills.
