Brittany’s smile warms the heart of everyone she meets, but this winter, she aimed to warm more than just hearts.
Eighteen-year-old Brittany Singleton has been volunteering in ChildServe’s Continuing Care Unit (CCU) since she graduated in May 2007. She enjoys reading books with the kids and just spending time with them. Sometimes she simply holds their hands until they fall asleep at night.
It was during these times that Brittany noticed that the children’s hands often felt chilly. The nurses told her that sometimes the kids have trouble staying warm due to their medical conditions. That was when Brittany decided to make a blanket for each and every child in the CCU.
“I didn’t want to make them any old blanket,” Brittany explained, “so I tried to see what was special to each of them and use that theme for their blanket.” She made each blanket out of cozy, colorful fleece and tied a fringe around each one. In all, she made and delivered more than 40 blankets for the children at ChildServe.
“I really enjoy volunteering at ChildServe. It makes me feel good to do something for the kids, and when I leave, I know they can tell I love them,” she says. “I want them to feel like it’s a big, warm hug from me every time they cuddle up with their special blanket.”
