Xander’s Story

Solving his communication problems

Xander’s parents April and Tony never expected to learn that the key to solving his communication problems had very little to do with Xander talking. It turned out to be one of the most important lessons they learned in It Takes Two to Talk® – The Hanen Program® for Parents of Children With Language Delays, hosted at ChildServe Center – Johnston.

Xander’s language delay made it hard for him to put more than two words together or form sentences. Because he didn’t speak often, his parents had trouble communicating with him and understanding what he wanted. The It Takes Two to Talk® program, designed to teach parents strategies to help children learn language, was exactly the jumpstart Xander’s family needed. It taught them that sometimes Xander needs just a little more time to respond to a question. The most helpful things his parents can do are listen and wait.

“We learned to let Xander drive the conversation rather than talking at him and the speech-language pathologists taught us how to speak to him in a way that encourages speech and encourages a response.”
